Music Timetables and Commencement of Lessons and Orchestra/Jazz Band

The 2016/17 music programme timetable is now available to view here

Music lessons resume in the school from Monday 12th September, for all with the exception of Junior Infants who will start their music lessons on week beginning Monday 19th September when their full school days begin. Please note that Senior Orchestra starts back Monday 19th September from 2.45pm-4.00pm, with Junior Orchestra resuming on Wednesday 21st September (2.45-4pm).

Please note that the music programme uses email to correspond with parents.  We ask parents to regularly check our upcoming events and news sections of the website. These areas will contain all the most up to date information regarding events and other developments within the programme. It will also have downloadable permission forms (where appropriate) and vital details of upcoming events etc.

The organisation of the music programme’s huge array of lessons for all the varied instruments and multiple groups within years is a huge task. We try our very best for all families involved to make lesson days and times as suitable as possible. This year’s timetable has been particularly difficult to organise due to the increasing number of children participating and the number of instrument choices available.  It has taken 2 months of intensive work to compile.  We regret therefore, that if your child’s music class clashes with any other extra-curricular activity, that it may be very difficult to accommodate any timetable changes.

If you have any urgent queries regarding the timetable, please contact the Music Programme Administrator by email only @ stcanicesimp@gmail.com and your query will be dealt with as soon as possible.

6th Class Farewell Concert

6th Class Farewell Concert – Thursday 9th June

Dear Parents,

The 6th Class Farewell Concert for children involved in the Instrumental Music Programme will take place on Thursday 9th June in the Big Room (Mr Crowley’s room) at 7.30pm.  This is always a lovely occasion as the children perform one final time as students of St Canice’s N.S.

Light refreshments and finger food will be served after the concert in the school foyer.  If your child is in Mr Hanricks class, you are asked to please bring in a plate of savoury finger food, and a plate of sweet finger food if your child is in either Mr Hoynes or Ms Conroys class.

Your child should be in full uniform for the concert.   If your child is currently hiring an instrument from the music programme, this instrument must be returned to the school that night and may be handed in to any music committee member.

We look forward to seeing you there and we hope that you enjoy the concert!

Music Programme Registration 2016/2017

Dear Parent/Guardian,

The following dates and times have been arranged for you to register your child for the music programme for next year. Registration will take place in the school lobby on;

Tues 31st May 1.30-3.30pm and 7-8pm
Wed 1st June 1.30-3.30pm and 7-8pm
Thurs 2nd June 1.30-3.30pm and 7-8pm

The form for registration was included as an insert in the Maytime Melodies Concert programme and is also available to download here. You can access more information regarding instrument choices and relevant fees on the music programme website by clicking here. If you wish your child to be part of the music programme next year, please register your child and pay the appropriate fees due at one of these registration sessions. These will be the only music registration sessions for 2016/17. It is vital that you pay the relevant fees at the time of registration. As you can appreciate there are over 400 children currently involved in the music programme and the time tabling of music lessons for all of these children is a huge task for the administrator. Late applications cause considerable disruption to this time- tabling, which is unfair on the programme administrator.

If you do not register at one of these sessions, we cannot guarantee that the instrument of choice will be available for your child for next year and a late application fee may also be applied. Details of fees and instrument choices for next year are also available on the website. (If you are experiencing financial difficulties, you can speak in the strictest of confidence with Ruth Walsh, Programme Administrator).

Many thanks for your co-operation,

The Music Committee

Maytime Melodies Important Update

The biennial Maytime Melodies concert is our main fundraiser and we rely heavily upon all monies raised by the concert to buy the many things required for the programme. If you can help out in any way by buying a concert ticket, becoming a “Friend of Maytime Melodies” or donating a raffle prize, we would be extremely grateful.

Concert Tickets

The tickets for the concerts are selling out fast. Tickets for the concerts can only be purchased from the Watergate Theatre.  Tickets cannot be purchased from the school or from music committee members, and all queries, ticket returns etc should be directed to the Watergate Theatre. Tickets are priced at €12 for adults and €7 for children.  Note re Percussion Groups: If you are in doubt which night your child is performing, please ask your child’s music teacher who will advise you.

Friends of Maytime Melodies

Traditionally, people involved in businesses locally have been given the opportunity to support the programme by advertising in the Maytime Melodies Programme. Following a suggestion by some parents, it was decided to extend this facility to all parents/guardians of children involved in the programme who may wish to be associated with and support the programme by becoming “Friends of Maytime Melodies”. The names of all “Friends” will be published in our Concert programme. If you would like to become a Maytime Melodies Friend, please submit a cheque for €20 made payable to St Canices Instrumental Music Programme by Friday 6th May 2016.

Raffle Prizes

Donations of raffle prizes would be extremely welcome! If you would like to donate a raffle prize, please contact one of the committee members who will be happy to assist you. The list of committee members is on the music website.

Finally, the children have been working really hard to ensure that you enjoy our concerts and I’m sure that you will be immensely proud of them on the night. We appreciate the support that parents and families continue to show us and we look forward to two great nights of music making!

Many Thanks

The Music Committee

Friends of Maytime Melodies

Friends of Maytime Melodies

Dear Parents/Guardians

We in St Canices N.S. are all justifiably very proud of our musicians and our music programme. We are proud of the many achievements of the children over the years and we know how much fun they have in playing music together. However running a music programme of this size and nature costs a lot of money and requires funding on an ongoing basis! The registration fees and instrument hire fees are not enough to fund the programme. The bi-annual Maytime Melodies concert is our main fundraiser and we rely heavily upon all monies raised by the concert to buy the many things required for the programme. For example, this year alone we have spent in excess of €1,000 on new music stands, replacing many of the older stands which were in a bad state of repair; we have to pay for the repair, replacement and maintenance of instruments on an ongoing basis, a new cello costs about €450 and in the past couple of years we have had to replace a number of cellos.

Please ensure you put the cheque in a sealed envelope with your name and the name of your child on the outside. Cheques can be left in the music post box in front lobby in the school, situated on the wall beside Kay’s office. All funds received will go directly towards our wonderful music programme and ensure that our children will continue to enjoy the benefits of the programme for many years to come!

Many thanks,
The Music Committee
