Maytime Melodies Running Order and Tickets

Tickets are available for Maytime Melodies from 3rd March at the Watergate Theatre. Tickets cannot be purchased from the school or from music committee members, and all queries, ticket returns etc should be directed to the Watergate Theatre.  Tickets for the concerts tend to sell very quickly so you are advised to purchase your tickets early.  Tickets are priced at €10 for adults and €5 for children.

This is our major fundraiser for the music programme and we appreciate the support that parents and families continue to show us.

New Administrator for the Music Programme

Mary and Ruth

The Music Programme will welcome a new Administrator in June when Ruth Walsh takes over from current Administrator, Mary Conway.  Mary has been Administrator of the Instrumental Music Programme for the past 3.5 years.  During that time, she oversaw the day-to-day running of the programme.   Mary was responsible for computerising the financial details of the IMP as well as completing a full inventory of the instruments.   She was also one of the main organisers of the very successful trip to the National Concert Hall in February 2012 where the Senior Orchestra took part in the prestigious IAYO Festival of Youth Orchestras.  One of Mary’s main jobs each year was the production of the music programme timetable each September – a task which has become more onerous and complicated each year as the programme continues to grow! It is a testament to Mary’s dedication and conscientiousness that the timetable was always produced on time! We wish to thank Mary for the amazing job she has done and most particularly for her commitment to the programme, often over and beyond the call of duty.  We wish her all the very best in her future endeavours.

Ruth Walsh will take over from Mary after the Maytime Melodies Concert. Ruth is a former student of Regina’s, who taught her in 5th class.  She was involved in music throughout her primary and secondary school years and is currently Leader of the newly formed St Canice’s Gateway Orchestra. Ruth has also been actively involved with Regina for the past 12 years, in helping out with weekly art classes for junior and senior infants. Regina is delighted that Ruth has agreed to take over the role which Mary has played in administering the music programme. We wish Ruth every success in her new position.

St Canice’s Music Programme Wins National Special Achievement Award!

KILKENNY IAYO 2

Saturday night was a very proud night for Regina O Leary as she accepted a Special Achievement Award from the Irish Association of Youth Orchestras (IAYO) in recognition of 30 years of music by St Canice’s Instrumental Music Programme.  Minister for Children, Frances Fitzgerald, presented Regina with the award onstage at the annual Festival of Youth Orchestras Concert at the National Concert Hall in recognition of the contribution the music programme has made to the development of youth orchestras.  Since the foundation of the programme in 1983, thousands of Kilkenny children have been given the opportunity to learn how to play a musical instrument and to enjoy playing music.  The IAYO make two special annual awards to organisations who have made a significant and innovative contribution to the development of their youth orchestras.  The Special Achievement Award was presented to the programme for a year of celebrations to mark the 30th anniversary which included the creation of our wonderful new website (by parent Kate O’Connell) and the very successful Gala Concert in the Watergate Theatre in June 2013.  Speaking after the presentation of the award,  Regina said the programme is a testament to the dedicated music teachers team, our wonderful and supportive principal Maria Comerford and teaching staff, the unprecedented commitment given by amazing Parents’ Committees both present and past and the gifted talented children who have passed through the doors of St Canice’s over the past 30 years.  Finally she said that the young musicians of St Canice’s have given her 30 years of unimaginable joy and long may it continue!
