Friends of Maytime Melodies

Friends of Maytime Melodies

Dear Parents/Guardians

We in St Canices N.S. are all justifiably very proud of our musicians and our music programme. We are proud of the many achievements of the children over the years and we know how much fun they have in playing music together. However running a music programme of this size and nature costs a lot of money and requires funding on an ongoing basis! The registration fees and instrument hire fees are not enough to fund the programme. The bi-annual Maytime Melodies concert is our main fundraiser and we rely heavily upon all monies raised by the concert to buy the many things required for the programme. For example, this year alone we have spent in excess of €1,000 on new music stands, replacing many of the older stands which were in a bad state of repair; we have to pay for the repair, replacement and maintenance of instruments on an ongoing basis, a new cello costs about €450 and in the past couple of years we have had to replace a number of cellos.

Traditionally, people involved in businesses locally have been given the opportunity to support the programme by advertising in the Maytime Melodies Programme. Following a suggestion by some parents, it was decided to extend this facility to all parents/guardians of children involved in the programme who may wish to be associated with and support the programme by becoming “Friends of Maytime Melodies”. The names of all “Friends” will be published in our Concert programme. If you would like to become a Maytime Melodies Friend, please submit a cheque for €20 made payable to St Canices Instrumental Music Programme by Friday 6th May 2016. Please ensure you put the cheque in a sealed envelope with your name and the name of your child on the outside. Cheques can be left in the music post box in front lobby in the school, situated on the wall beside Kay’s office. All funds received will go directly towards our wonderful music programme and ensure that our children will continue to enjoy the benefits of the programme for many years to come!

Many thanks,
The Music Committee

Maytime Melodies Tickets

Dear Parents,

The running order of the Maytime Melodies concerts is shown below. The length of the concert has been reduced this year and will start at 7.30pm and finish around 9.00pm. All children involved in the music programme will perform in either one of the smaller groups or as part of the larger orchestra/jazz band/brass ensembles. We hope that the shorter concert time will enable parents and children to stay for the duration of the concert. This will provide the younger children in particular with an opportunity to see how they can progress up through the music programme.

Tickets for the concerts will go on sale from Monday 22nd February and may only be purchased from the Watergate Theatre. Tickets cannot be purchased from the school or from music committee members, and all queries, ticket returns etc should be directed to the Watergate Theatre. Tickets for the concerts tend to sell very quickly so you are advised to purchase your tickets early. Tickets are priced at €12 for adults and €7 for children. If you are in doubt which night your child is performing, please ask your child’s music teacher who will advise you.

This is our major fundraiser for the music programme and we appreciate the support that parents and families continue to show us. Further information on the concerts will issue nearer the concert dates.

Many Thanks
The Music Committee

Advertising for Maytime Melodies

Dear Parents,

Every two years St Canice’s N.S Instrumental Music Programme presents the “Maytime Melodies” concerts at the Watergate Theatre. This year’s concerts will be held on Tuesday 24th and Wednesday 25th May. The concerts feature the 440 young musicians who participate in the music programme throughout the year. The children are aged between 4 and 12 years of age and play a variety of string, brass, wind, and percussion instruments. The success of the music programme is dependent on both assistance from the teachers and the many parents who volunteer their time as well as fundraising for the purchase and upkeep of the instrument bank.

Maytime Melodies is the major fundraiser for the music programme and every second year we ask our local businesses to support the programme by either advertising in the concert programme or donating/sponsoring a raffle prize. If you have a local business and would like to advertise in the Maytime Melodies programme, please contact Ciara Bracken 086 8176763 or Jane Harte 086 3895792 who will be happy to assist you. The rates for placing an advert are as follows:

€90 full page

€50 half page

€30 quarter page

A music programme of this size and nature requires significant ongoing funding. Your support of this unique, locally based programme is very much appreciated.

Lionheart Concert Thursday 10th December

Dear Parents,

As you are aware, the Senior Jazz band are performing this Thursday 10th December in the Lionhearts Christmas Concert in St. Canice’s Cathedral.

The concert begins at 7.30pm and the jazz band will perform in the first half. Can you ensure that your child is down at the Cathedral for 7.15pm. They should be ready for collection at 8.30pm.

Music Sweatshirts

Each child has been given out a red music sweatshirt with a number on it which corresponds to your child’s name. This is your child’s sweatshirt for the year and it is their responsibility to look after it. Music sweatshirts will be collected at the end of the school year. Unfortunately the music programme cannot absorb the cost of lost sweatshirts so if your child loses their sweatshirt there will be a replacement cost applied.

Concert Attire

Children should wear their red music sweatshirt, white polo t-shirt and blue jeans for the concert on the night.

We look forward to a great night of music and hope that you enjoy it!

Many thanks,

The Music Committee
